Chip Off the Old Block

My daughter has been attending communion classes. Along with learning about communion, she has been learning acolyte duties. She served has acolyte for the first time yesterday at church. She’s a shy girl, gets really nervous going up in front of people.

I prayed a lot for her.

She walked into the sanctuary smiling and did a wonderful job. Ada proposed to her friend, G, that if she would sit with her up front her first time, she’d go sit with G up front her first time. It gave her a little extra confidence.

During the service, she had to light one of the advent candles. Our PMA nodded to her when it was time. Ada asked which one to light.

Jim: “The northwest candle.”

Ada: “Okay.”

Pause.

“Which way is northwest?”

Like her mother, she has no sense of direction indoors.

Jim smiled and said, “I’ll just go with you and show you.”

We love Jim.

She’ll celebrate her First Communion this coming weekend. We’re looking forward to it.

Lack of Words?

I never thought it possible, but I’m finding I’ve been short on words lately. In blog world, that is. I don’t think I could ever run out words for writing entirely.

I write a monthly column for a regional paper and have been writing about my experiences for that lately. Between updating facebook statuses and the column, I feel like I’m lacking blog stories!

And to be frank, I think I forgot I had a blog over the past week or two.

Update at our place:

Fall harvest is over. A neighbor offered to help pick corn last weekend. Rain was in the forecast for Monday, so Joe decided we had to finish. By Sunday evening, we had our two trucks filled and the neighbor’s three, all waiting for the local elevators to open Monday morning.

What a great feeling to have something done.

This week, Joe has spent some time trying to catch up on paperwork. Our hired men have been repairing existing fence and building new electric fence around stalk and stubble fields for our cow herd. In the coming weeks we will start moving cows out to fields to graze.

Monday we will start weaning calves from those cows and deliver some to the feedlot. At that time they’ll be given vaccinations and electric i.d. tags. We’ll also evaluate heifers (females) to determine if we want to keep any of them to replace old cows.

We’ll have some industry workshops to attend next weekend. It will be nice to get off the farm for a while!

I get to be home for a few days before going to wean and work calves. I’m very happy. Our house is a mess. I’m having a Pampered Chef party for a friend this weekend. I now have some serious incentive to get my house clean: guests!

In case I’m not back before then, have a great weekend.
